Chile

South America

Chile gives new residents three years of Chilean-source-only taxation under Article 3 LIR, extendable to six in practice, but Article 10 sources income to where the work is physically performed, so a remote salary earned sitting in Chile is not sheltered by the headline exemption. There is no digital nomad visa, and Ley 21.325 generally requires converting from tourist to resident status at a consulate abroad rather than from inside the country.

Common risks

Patterns that often catch cross-border workers here. Whether they apply to you depends on your setup.

  • No digital nomad visa exists, despite paid listings claiming otherwise

  • Article 10 sources remote work performed in Chile as Chilean income, so the 3-year exemption does not shelter it

  • Converting from tourist to resident status generally means applying from a consulate abroad, not from inside Chile
