What the rules say about Croatia
The rules below are the ones most likely to shape a stay in Croatia, in plain words and with the source behind each one. Your own report tells you which of them apply to you.
- Significant issueTax residency
Past 183 days of physical presence, you become a Croatian tax resident
A continuous or time-linked physical stay of at least 183 days in one or two calendar years makes you a Croatian resident taxpayer under the habitual-abode test. As a resident you are taxed on worldwide income at progressive rates: 15 to 23 percent (default 20 if your municipality sets none) up to 60,000 euro a year, and 25 to 33 percent (default 30) above that, with a personal allowance of 600 euro a month. The local surtax was abolished from 1 January 2024 and folded into these municipal rates. The statutory count is technically '183 days in one or two calendar years' rather than a strict rolling 12-month window, this engine's totalDays12m figure is a practical approximation of that idea.
- Significant issuePersonal income tax
No US-Croatia tax treaty is in force yet
The US-Croatia income tax treaty was signed 7 December 2022, an amending Protocol was signed 28 April 2026, and the Croatian ratification bill was approved 30 July 2026, but as of this research it is NOT yet in force: it is still awaiting US Senate advice and consent. That means Americans get no treaty relief today: no tie-breaker rules, no reduced withholding, and no treaty-based relief from double taxation. Only Croatia's domestic rules and the US foreign tax credit or Foreign Earned Income Exclusion are available in the meantime.
- Significant issueResidency routes
The digital-nomad permit is a dead end for settlement, do not build a PR plan on it
The Digital Nomad Residence Permit does NOT convert to another permit, and its time does NOT count toward permanent residence. The mandatory gap between permits, commonly cited as around 6 months outside Croatia, breaks the continuous-residence chain that permanent residence requires. If settling long-term is your real goal, the DNV is the wrong vehicle even though it is the easiest permit to get for a remote worker.
- Significant issueImmigration and visa
Past 90 days on a short-stay status, you are overstaying
Schengen short stays, whether visa-free or on a C-visa, max out at 90 days in any 180. Past that without a national visa or residence permit like the digital-nomad permit, you are overstaying. Overstaying exposes you to fines, a removal decision, and a potential Schengen-wide entry ban recorded in the Schengen Information System. The exact Croatian fine schedule was not confirmed in this research. Enforcement is increasingly automated as the EU's Entry/Exit System rolls out.
- Needs checkingMoving your company
Running your old foreign company from a Croatian home office risks dragging its tax residence with you
If you manage your existing foreign company from Croatia, you risk creating a Croatian permanent establishment, a fixed place of business, and more significantly, shifting the company's place of effective management to Croatia. That can make the WHOLE company Croatian tax-resident on its worldwide profit, not just the part connected to Croatia. A solo founder relocating and simply continuing to run their existing company from a Croatian home office is the classic trigger for this.
- Needs checkingCrypto tax and legal status
Selling crypto within 2 years of buying costs 12 percent flat
As a private investor, capital gains are taxed at 12 percent flat when you dispose of crypto, sell to fiat, spend it, or on the stricter reading exchange it, within 2 years of acquisition. No personal allowance applies to capital income. The historical rate was quoted as '10 percent plus local surtax', but the surtax was abolished from 1 January 2024 and the current flat capital-income rate is 12 percent. Some crypto sites still quote 10 percent, treat those as outdated.
