What the rules say about Jersey

The rules below are the ones most likely to shape a stay in Jersey, in plain words and with the source behind each one. Your own report tells you which of them apply to you.

  1. Significant issueImmigration and visa

No digital nomad visa exists, and none is announced

Jersey has never operated a digital nomad visa and has no route designed for a self-employed remote worker with foreign clients. There is also no retiree route and no passive-income route. Jersey's population policy is actively trying to reduce, not attract, undifferentiated inbound migration.

  2. Significant issueTax residency

Owning or renting Jersey accommodation and spending even one night there makes you resident

If accommodation is available for your use in Jersey, owned, rented, or employer-provided after 2 calendar years, and you spend even one night there in the tax year, you are resident for that year. Short hotel stays do not count as available accommodation, but a holiday flat does. This is the mirror image of Denmark's home-residency trap and just as unforgiving.

  3. Significant issueHealthcare coverage

Jersey is not the NHS, and there is no reciprocal health agreement with the UK for residents

Jersey is not in the NHS, and gov.je is explicit that residents are not covered by any reciprocal health agreement with the UK, that arrangement only covers people visiting Jersey or the UK, not people who move. The only free care for a newcomer is emergency treatment in the Emergency Department. GP visits, non-emergency hospital treatment, prescriptions, dental care and antenatal clinics are paid for from day one.

  4. Significant issueMoving your company

A company is Jersey tax resident if incorporated there or centrally managed and controlled there, both directions bite

A company is Jersey tax resident if it is incorporated in Jersey or if its place of central management and control is in Jersey. Both directions are dangerous. A Jersey-incorporated company managed from your kitchen table in Amsterdam or Berlin is resident there instead, under that country's place-of-effective-management test, and the Jersey wrapper achieves nothing while creating filing obligations in two places. Conversely, a foreign company whose founder relocates to Jersey and runs it from Jersey becomes Jersey resident on the central management and control test. Jersey-incorporated companies managed and controlled elsewhere can sometimes be treated as non-resident in Jersey provided certain conditions are satisfied, commonly understood to require taxation elsewhere at 10 percent or more, but the exact conditions were not confirmed from a primary source.

  5. Significant issuePersonal income tax

No relief instrument at all with most of the roster, Jersey is not a treaty hub

Jersey has only 16 full double taxation agreements and 14 to 15 partial ones. Of the requested roster, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, the United States, Canada, Brazil and Indonesia have information exchange TIEAs and nothing more, and Spain appears to have no tax instrument at all. Because Jersey's own rate ceiling is 20 percent with no CGT, double-tax exposure usually runs outbound, a Jersey resident with source income in one of these countries is taxed there first with only Jersey's unilateral foreign tax credit as relief.

  6. Needs checkingLocal registrations

Housing is rationed by legal status, not price, on a 5 and 10-year clock

The Control of Housing and Work Law splits the population into five statuses. Registered is what a newcomer actually is, ordinarily resident 3 months or more, may only lease Registered property, employer permission required to work at all. Entitled for Work arrives after 5 consecutive years of residence, unlocking the labour market with no employer permission needed, but housing stays Registered-only. Entitled arrives after 10 years, continuous if not born in Jersey, and unlocks buying, selling or leasing any property plus unrestricted work, this is Jersey's own concept of permanent residence. Licensed and Licensed Lease Only are employer-sponsored essential-employee bypasses needing no residence period, requiring salaries of at least 60,000 pounds and 54,000 pounds respectively to employ, against 30,000 pounds or the going rate for Registered. A newcomer with 5 million pounds cannot simply buy a house, money does not substitute for status. For context, Statistics Jersey's Q2 2026 figures put average prices from 326,000 pounds for a one-bed flat up to 1,122,000 pounds for a four-bed house, up 5.0 percent year on year but still 10.0 percent below the Q3 2022 peak.
