What the rules say about Bolivia
The rules below are the ones most likely to shape a stay in Bolivia, in plain words and with the source behind each one. Your own report tells you which of them apply to you.
- Significant issueImmigration and visa
Tourist stays cap at 90 days per calendar year, and you cannot border-run it
DS 1923 grants an initial 30 days on arrival plus a permanencia transitoria extension of up to 60 further days, capped at 90 days total in a calendar year, not per entry. One 2026 guide claims 90 days on arrival and 180 per year, which contradicts the regulation, the engine rule here is 30 plus 60 equals 90 per calendar year. Overstaying draws a fine of UFV 12 per day of irregular permanence, an inflation-indexed unit that keeps the daily fine small in boliviano terms, or a 3-year temporary mandatory exit (salida obligatoria) under DS 1923 and Ley 370 Article 68. The 3-year re-entry bar, not the daily fine, is the real sanction.
- Significant issueRight to work
Tourists may not work in Bolivia, full stop
Ley 370 Article 51 explicitly prohibits persons admitted as tourists from performing any paid activity, with the sole exception of express authorisation from the Direccion General de Migracion granted on humanitarian grounds. There is no carve-out for remote work performed for a foreign employer or foreign clients, the prohibition is about your immigration status, not about where your paycheck comes from.
- Needs checkingPersonal income tax
PwC's remote-work trap, a foreign employer does not save you from RC-IVA
PwC states it verbatim, non-domiciled individuals who receive Bolivian-source labour income paid by non-resident entities are considered direct taxpayers of RC-IVA and must declare and pay the tax on a monthly basis or upon leaving the country, whichever event occurs first. There is no employer to withhold, so the liability is personal, monthly, and crystallises at the border on exit. This presupposes exactly the fact pattern of an employee of a foreign company working from inside Bolivia, and it is the single most important paragraph in the corridor for a nomad employee.
- Needs checkingTax residency
Working from Bolivian soil makes the income Bolivian-source, whoever pays
Ley 843 Article 42 defines Bolivian-source profits as those arising from activity physically performed on Bolivian soil, expressly irrelevant to the nationality, domicile or residence of the parties or the place the contract was signed. Read literally, a freelancer sitting in Santa Cruz invoicing a Dutch client is performing an activity in national territory. The safe reading, work performed while physically outside Bolivia stays foreign-source and out of scope, remuneration for services personally performed while physically present in Bolivia is Bolivian-source, whoever pays. Bolivia's own zero-rated export-of-services VAT regime under Ley 1489 corroborates this, you do not need to zero-rate something that was never in scope to begin with. This tax exposure starts on day one with no threshold to cross, and it applies even to someone on tourist status, immigration status and tax liability are decoupled in Bolivia, a tourist can owe RC-IVA.
- Needs checkingCrypto tax and legal status
The wealth tax has no crypto carve-out, and it is worldwide
The IGF taxes residents on worldwide net wealth above BOB 30 million, about USD 2.45 million at the 12.26 rate of 2 September 2026, at 1.4 to 2.4 percent, and nothing in the statute excludes crypto. A resident holding more than that threshold in crypto anywhere in the world is, on the face of the statute, inside the IGF net, and the IGF is the one place Bolivia abandons its usual territorial principle (see the IGF rule under Exit Taxation). This is the single largest crypto tax exposure in Bolivia, and it is a wealth tax, not an income tax, it does not care whether the crypto was ever sold. There is no exit tax on crypto either, following from the general absence of an exit tax and personal CGT.

The wealth tax breaks territoriality, and devaluation silently lowered its dollar threshold by 43 percent
The Impuesto a las Grandes Fortunas, enacted 28 December 2020, applies to residents and non-residents whose net wealth exceeds BOB 30 million measured at 31 December each year, at progressive rates of 1.4 to 2.4 percent. For residents the base includes assets located in Bolivia and abroad, which PwC explicitly frames as a break with Bolivia's traditional source principle, this is the one place Bolivia abandons territoriality. BOB 30 million at the old 6.96 peg was about USD 4.31 million, at the 12.26 rate of 2 September 2026 the same statutory threshold is about USD 2.45 million. The IGF net has silently tightened by roughly 43 percent in dollar terms with no legislative change, and every English-language source still quotes the old USD 4.3 million figure. Anyone with net worth between USD 2.4 million and USD 4.3 million who read the old figure and concluded they were safe is now inside the net. Whether the BOB 30 million threshold is indexed to inflation was not established, if it is fixed in nominal bolivianos the dollar threshold keeps falling as the currency depreciates. Repeal is a live, government-sponsored effort, not a rumour, President Paz and Economy Minister Espinoza announced the repeal on 25 November 2025, it went to the Legislature inside the 2026 budget, and the Chamber of Deputies planning committee rejected the bill in February 2026, with the Executive saying it will insist. The IGF remains fully in force today, with 2025 filings due March 2026 for residents and April 2026 for non-residents, but repeal is a real and actively tracked possibility, not a closed question.
What tends to surprise people here
- Tourists may not work at all, and the 90-day cap cannot be reset with a border run
- The IGF wealth tax reaches residents' worldwide net wealth above roughly BOB 30 million, with no crypto carve-out
- No digital nomad, rentista or investor visa exists
