What the rules say about Maldives
The rules below are the ones most likely to shape a stay in Maldives, in plain words and with the source behind each one. Your own report tells you which of them apply to you.
- Significant issueImmigration and visa
Staying past 90 days without another legal basis is an overstay
Ninety days (the 30-day visa plus the full 60-day extension) is the ceiling on the tourist route, and there is currently no visa that legally extends a remote worker past it, since the announced Remote Working Visa is not yet live. Overstaying is enforced under the Immigration Act (Law No. 1/2007): fines, detention at the Immigration Detention Centre, deportation at your own expense, and re-entry bans running from months to years. One widely cited fine figure is around MVR 15,000, though NaVi could not confirm an exact per-day schedule from a primary source this run, and fines must be cleared before you are allowed to leave.
- Significant issueTax residency
A permanent home in the Maldives makes you a full tax resident, on any day count
The first limb of the residency test does not care how many days you were present. If your permanent place of abode is in the Maldives, you are a tax resident on worldwide income, full stop. This is the one path in the Maldives system that bypasses the favorable temporary-resident carve-out entirely.
- Significant issueRight to work
Working for a Maldivian business without a permit is not authorized on any visit status
A tourist visa, on-arrival or extended, does not confer any right to work in the Maldives. Sources are explicit that working while on a tourist visa can get you deported. The lawful route for local employment runs through an employer's Employment Approval and Work Visa process, via the Xpat System and a foreign employment quota under Regulation 2023/R-111, which is built for a Maldivian employer hiring you in, not for you freelancing with local clients on a visit status.
- Significant issuePermanent residency and citizenship
Maldivian citizenship requires being Muslim, and takes 12 years even then
Article 9 of the 2008 Constitution provides that a non-Muslim may not become a citizen of the Maldives. For those who qualify on that basis, naturalisation needs age 21 or over, being of sound mind, and 12 years of continuous residence, treated as met if the applicant was abroad no more than 6 months and resided in the Maldives more than 10 years in aggregate. It also requires knowledge of the Constitution and the ability to write and speak Dhivehi. There is no citizenship-by-investment programme, no sum of money shortens the 12-year clock or waives the religion requirement.
- Needs checkingMoving your company
Corporate tax runs 15 percent above MVR 500,000, and where you run the company from matters
Corporate income tax is 15 percent on taxable profit above MVR 500,000, and 0 percent below that. Commercial banks are taxed at 25 percent, and international transport operators at 2 percent of gross Maldives-source income. A company is a Maldives tax resident if it is incorporated in the Maldives, or its head office is in the Maldives, or it is controlled and managed from the Maldives. That control-and-management limb is the one movers miss, running your existing foreign company from a desk in Male makes that company a Maldives tax resident on its own, no incorporation needed.
- Needs checkingCrypto tax and legal status
Crypto is not legal tender in the Maldives and no licensed exchange exists
The Maldives Monetary Authority stated in October 2018, and restated in 2021, that no party has been granted permission to conduct any financial transaction using cryptocurrencies or other virtual currencies, and that Maldivian law does not allow cryptocurrencies to be used for valid business transactions. The MMA has warned about forged or bogus permits circulating for crypto trading, and Bank of Maldives has publicly denied involvement in crypto exchange services. Holding crypto privately is not criminalised, no statute makes possession, self-custody or offshore trading an offence, but crypto is not treated as money or a financial product, so holders have no regulatory protection, no local recourse, and no licensed on-ramp or off-ramp. The Capital Market Development Authority has drafted a Capital Market Sandbox Regulation and a Securities Virtual Asset Service Providers Regulation, with public consultation closing 15 December 2025, but no enactment or commencement notice was found as of this research. A USD 8.8 billion blockchain financial centre announced in May 2025 as a joint venture with a Dubai investor is a pledge, not an enacted legal framework, and its marketed tax promises should not be relied on.
